When you get ready to travel make sure your passport will be good at least six months past the time of your arrival to your destination, since most countries require this for entry. Most passports are good till 10 years after you first get it then you have to renew it every 10 years. Some people wonder if I can i keep my old passport, that is up to whoever renews your passport to if they will send all went back also. I don't know why you want it since the best thing to do is when you renew it and receive it back have a certified copy made of the first two pages inside so that if you should lose it or it gets stolen you have proved of having your passport. It is better to get a certified copy of your passport than keeping your old passport since they don't know if you renewed it or not. I am renewing my passport right now and really don't care if I get the old one back anyway since it will not do me any good.
